Rendezvous - Bloomsday

Rendezvous - Bloomsday

In this painting Bloom meets a girl of the night, somewhere on the north side of Dublin near the Black Church. In the distance is also the Four Courts and a collage of typical Dublin houses. They are obviously intimate, holding hands. Strangely a fish floats in the corner.

Bloom is 10

"As you may know, Bloom was formed 10 years ago on June 16th and it’s not just our name that has Joycean links, our place of business has too. The Black Church is mentioned briefly in the novel Ulysses, in the chapter entitled Oxen of the Sun, as the location of one of Bello’s many sins: “He went through a form of clandestine marriage with at least one woman in the shadow of the Black Church.”

Every year to commemorate Bloomsday, we commission an artist to interpret this excerpt in their own unique way. This year Ludmila Korol, a Ukrainian artist living in Ireland, has stepped up to the challenge. This will be the fourth in the series, following Graham Knuttel, Joby Hickey and Paul Kerr.

We hope you enjoy Korol’s surreal yet figurative interpretation." Posted on Thursday, June 17, 2010 @ 15:41 by david under Blog, Work

"Ulysses, written by James Joyce – one of Ireland’s most cantankerous exiles – is very funny, organic, lively and grows on rereading. The more snobbish among us will concede it has enormous credibility, everywhere . . . this is a novel that really can change your life; well, perhaps not change it, but it should improve it." Eileen Battersby Irish Times
